Don’t even pretend you didn’t miss me last week because I know it isn’t true. You have literally been waiting by the computer for days to see if I had fun on my family vacation. Haven’t you?

Well, since you asked, I did have a wonderful time on Mackinac Island with Brian’s family. I repeat, I spent a WEEK on AN ISLAND with MY IN-LAWS.
And no one tried to swim away.

If you follow me on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook, you know I blew up social media with photos from our trip. I thoroughly enjoyed sharing our week with you and reading your hilarious reactions. However, one comment had me (and my mother-in-law, Robyn) in stitches the entire week. This one by Jennifer Mesh takes the cake:
You’re so right, Jennifer! Our resort (Mission Point Resort) looked exactly like a scene from Dirty Dancing.
And while I’m not exactly a fan of the premise of that film (daughter disappoints father and loses virginity to gyrating hooligan), I do identify with it in many ways (I love to dance, I have a very strong bond with my father, and I am a former hooligan).
So, that is why I decided to create this post for you, Jennifer, entitled “I Carried a Watermelon: 9 Ways My Vacation was like Dirty Dancing” (in a wholesome way).
1) Jennifer pretty much hit the nail on the head, but I picture Jennifer Grey on that lawn practicing the mambo. Am I right?
Wait…Jennifer Mesh. Jennifer Grey. And then I had a comment from yet another Jennifer above that one.
Already, the similarities are frightening.
2) There were rich people there. Lots of them.
3) I think I resemble Jennifer Grey a bit in this photo. Before her nose job.
4) This.
5) The late, great actor Jerry Orbach played Baby’s father. My brother-in-law’s name is also Gerry. And he’s a father. Of two girls.
Eerie, right?
Wait, it gets better.
6) Patrick Swayze was a serious hunk who could dance like a dream.
Brian has the hunk part down.
Hawt.
7) Baby’s father realized at the end of the film that he has very little control over his daughter’s behavior.
Like, none.
Whatsoever.
Not even a little.
(*Sigh*)
8) I carried a watermelon.
Two of them, actually.
9) Nobody puts me in a corner.
Unless the buffet is in the corner.
And then I’ll pretty much put myself there.
Glad you all had such a good time. I LOVE the pictures of Averi. They do remind me of someone I know!!

imklvr Dona, it was pretty suffocating to step off the plane back into the Kansas heat—which wasn’t 110 degrees, but close. That relief from the heat was one of the best thing about our trip!

Colleen A Argentine Colleen, that is the scariest thing anyone has ever said to me. 🙂 She DOES have my mom’s energy and spirit. Which should make for an interesting time when she’s a teenager.
I just decided that next time. You need to take a nanny on your vacation w u. And since its my idea, I get the part. 😀 Or maybe I could be your assistant. Like for family photo shoots…. Umm drink carrier. We can think of many handy things for me to do. As long as I get some beach time. And some quality Katy’s kids time. Ok. Or not. It’s all good.

I was TOTALLY missing you last week! While you were enjoying the scenic Mackinac Island I was stuck in a campground staring at the side of a 39 ft 5-th wheel pooping next to strangers in the bath house…don’t be jealous…I’m sure you had a good time too.
Adrienn Me and camping do NOT get along. I choose not to do my business close to strangers, large animals that can maul me to death, or ticks. Glad you had fun, though! 😉

I love this!! And I think more people ought to quote this movie. I sometimes say, “I carried a watermelon” and it seems like they don’t get it. I’m not embarrassed by it though, just sorry for them that they don’t know what I’m referring to!
Believe it or not I was missing your posts, but knew you would have great stories to tell when you returned. They always make laugh! LOVE the pics of Averi they are absolutely adorable. Glad you all had a nice time and keep the stories coming!
