We have a winner and a consensus:
Sarah: “Definitely Dangly. Gangly is when your arms and legs are long and awkward – to me anyway…” Shoot me an email at katy@katyinacorner.com to redeem your earrings!
And the consensus is that “gangly earrings” is not a thing. They’re dangly. Google is wrong.
Alrighty, it’s giveaway time. And confession time. Don’t worry dad. It’s just a goofy confession about my changing body that not even my closest friends know about me.
Aaaaaaaaaaand we just lost my dad.
[Please tell me she’s not about to talk about women’s troubles.]
Don’t worry, I’m not talking about women’s troubles. I’m talking about my ears.
[I guess it depends on the woman as to whether or not there’s trouble in that department.]
Oh SNAP! But, seriously, cut it out. This is a friendly place.
[Who is Katy always talking to in the brackets? I’m so confused by this blog sometimes.]
So, my ears. They’re just…different. For one, they just don’t work as well as they used to, according to my husband. Whether or not that is a “selective” phenomenon is still up for debate.
But they’re also pretty small compared to the rest of my skull. I never noticed this until my dad jokingly called me “Princess Little Ears” a few years ago. So let this be a lesson to all you parents out there. Your children will never forget the nicknames you give them.
It’s cool. I call him Baldilocks, so we’re even.
In addition to the disproportionate ear-to-skull ratio (blame it on my impressively large brain), the top of my right ear is…hard to describe, actually. I guess the best way to say it is to tell you that my Helix is permanently stuck to my Scapha.
It’s almost like someone superglued it when I was a baby and it never got unstuck. That is some seriously impressive superglue. And I would totally blame it on my brother if my dad and my son didn’t have the same bizarre-o Glued Ear Syndrome. (I just made that up. Don’t WebMD it.)
And that brings me to the third issue I have with my ears: my lobes. Y’all, my lobes are so embarrassing. They’re on a one-way trip to Sagville. I can’t even wear gangly earrings any more for fear that the slightest breeze will rip my lobes in half.
(Yes, I said “gangly.” I thought up until this very moment that they were “dangly.” But I Googled it and found that I was wrong. They’re gangle earrings. They’re gangly.)
In case you’re curious, my sagging lobes aren’t the result of those huge gauge ear hole things. I’m sorry if you have those, but they make my skin crawl. I seriously can’t even look at them. I guess it’s because I have such lobe issues naturally, and I think to myself, WHY would someone do that ON PURPOSE? It’s like voluntarily stretching your belly skin out before you have kids! It doesn’t make any sense to me.
Anyhow, it appears that I’m stuck with studs the rest of my life. (Insert corny joke from my husband here. My dad would chime in too, but he left a long time ago.)
I told you all of this lunacy to let you know that I have lobe envy. More accurately, I have gangly earring envy.
I LOVE gangly earrings. (It’s really hard for me to adjust to this new word.)
And it was difficult for me to shop when we were in New York City a few weeks ago and pass by all those fun, cheap earrings and not buy them.
So, I did buy them.
I bought lots of them.
Seven pairs to be exact.
And I want to give them away to one of my readers!
Just know that I’m giving these away begrudgingly because I envy your luscious lobes.
[This just got really creepy.]
Seriously, I would love to give these cuties to one of my readers whose lobes aren’t hanging to her shoulder pads.
[Shoulder pads? This is the worst fashion blog ever.]
Good thing this isn’t a fashion blog, y’all. Or a cooking blog. Or a potty training blog. Or a crafting blog. Or a vocabulary blog. Or any kind of blog that is actually helpful in any way.
I’m still having a blog identity crisis if I’m being perfectly honest. But there really isn’t a category for “girl who talks to herself in brackets in the middle of a post, rambles for 1,000 words about lobe envy and then gives away earrings.” Random doesn’t begin to describe it.
To enter the giveaway, just answer this question in the comment section below:
Are they called “gangly” or “dangly” earrings?
Giveaway 100% sponsored by Katy in a Corner and her gangly ear lobes. Winner will be chosen at random and announced on Friday, September 13, 2013. Comments will be closed for consideration at midnight on Thursday.
I call them dangly earrings although I like your version “gangly” a bit more after reading this post!
This is my first time here (came over from My Life and Kids). I am cracking up! I’d go with dangly!
They’re called gangly – although I always thought they were dangly too 😉 And those earrings are absolutely gorgeous 🙂
Definitely Dangly. Gangly is when your arms and legs are long and awkward – to me anyway…
They have to be called dangly earrings, gangly is a tall, thin, and awkward person. Although, I guess you could have tall, thin, and awkward earrings?
I would call them dangly but actually I like the word gangly much better!!! Lol I only wear the same pair of earrings everyday and never take them out..I have tons of the dangly/gangly but I like my diamond studs the best that Mema gave me 🙂 I love your fun blogs every morning they make me smile everyday while I sit in this office cubicle surrounded by boring white walls!!! Thanks for always making my day!!! Love you 🙂 by the way you don’t have to enter me into the giveaway 😉 xoxo
I’ll chime in … personally, they’re dangly in my book!! Just sounds prettier (??), I think. 🙂
Dangly! Dangly!
Also, my ear problem is that when my ears were pierced when I was a kid the piercing was put way too high on my lobe. I always think I should get some super cute DANGLY earrings but I’m the worst shopper! You may have to be my dangly earring shopper.
Pick me! Pick me! Please, pick me! I love gangly/dangly earrings!
BTW – I love your blog and I check it daily. Then on the days that you vlog, I have to check back in after work, so I can actually LISTEN to what you had to say that day.
Oh – and did I mention that I’m a Katie too?
Regardless of what Google says, they are definitely called DANGLY. Eww, gangly implies tall and lanky and too skinny, in my opinion. Nothing like the prettiness of dangly earrings!!
Thanks for the laughs! 🙂
Dangly. For sure. They dangle from your ears. Duh, random Internet person spreading falsehoods to my friends. I’ve always heard gangly referring to someone that’s really skinny (and possibly awkward) as in, “Whew! That boy is gangly!!”
I also have lobe issues, Katy. When I got mine pierced, the tech put them in crooked instead of straight in from the front, so my DANGLY earrings never hang right. But that doesn’t mean I don’t want to win yours!!! I wear dangly earrings regularly!!!
I think they’re dangly earrings. Gangly makes me think of a skinny 11-yr-old girl who has already reached her adult height.
Love reading your blog…..
Dangly. Gangly reminds me of a tall, skinny, awkward teenage boy. As my hubby would put it… “I was a tall and gangly (and comical!) boy.” 🙂 Beautiful earrings!
I’d go w dangly. Or jangley. *jingle jangle*
Dangly would be the correct “southern” term!!! LOL!! Love your blog!!
Love you blog! I agree..I don’t understand the gauge earning trend either…freaks me out…
I would call them “hanging”. But that’s probably because I am German and not a native speaker. I am making up so many words. Or I just say it in German but pronounce it in English. Works always. Seriously.
I really wish I could stand out from everyone and say I liked gangly better. Alas… I’m with everyone else. I don’t care what google says — gangly sounds like a teenager that hasn’t quite grown into her legs and arms! Dangly earrings are much better!
Doesn’t gangly mean lanky and awkward? I’m stinking with dangly, because they dangle. I happen to love dangly earrings because while the skin On my stomach looks like I hijacked a Sharpe my lobes are still quite supple. I’d love a pair!
I call them dangly. My kids think the dangly earrings are for their enjoyment. “Oh, these danglies make mama scream in agony.”
Love your blog!
Definitely dangly- but from now on I will probably always pause before I say that word to consider saying “gangly”. 🙂
Dangly for sure, gangly is really a word? Really?
Dangly, for sure! Although, when I wear bigger earrings, my 3 year old just calls them “those big things in your ears”….”Mommy, what are those big things coming out of your ears?!” HA! Won’t stop me from wearing them!
I am a die hard DANGLY earring girl myself! I feel naked if I don’t have earrings on! Thanks for the new vocab word – GANGLY! (*Its going to take some getting use to 😉 )
Definitely DANGLY!!! The earrings are sooo pretty. I bet you are the only one who notices imperfections with your ears. Who cares? Enjoy life! xoxox
Don’t enter me in the drawing, I don’t even have pierced ears, so if I won I would probably sell the lot on eBay! Just wanted to throw out there that I have virtually no earlobes- I got it from my Dad. There isn’t a part that hangs down at all and I think there’s a word for it but I don’t know it. It’s not dangly though!
(And in my mind these would definitely be dangly earrings, not gangly. They dangle down from the ear, they do not gangle.)
They have to be called dangly. Gangly sounds like a gross puss filled infection that would happen if you left the dangly pretties in your ears too long.
I have always said dangly or big earrings but now that I know what google says, I will have to use the correct word! Beautiful earrings, and you wouldn’t have to ship them if I win! Just trying to help you out!
Oh, Jessica, and any other new person, read all the older posts, you will love them!
Dangly for sure. Gangly sounds like it would be a blend between GAUDY and DANGLY. Those are definitely NOT gaudy (they’re super cute!), so Gangly would not be an accurate description 🙂
I kind of hope I win – I pretty much fail at earrings. I have had them pierced for 13 years, but rarely wear earrings because I just don’t have the fashion sense to know what would look cute with my outfit. Maybe 7 new pairs would give me some fun options to work with 🙂
Sorry ’bout your earlobes, by the way. Life’s tough sometimes. I personally have issues with my toenails. It’s always something.
You oh so often put into words my every day thoughts and feelings. You originally caught my attention with your “How to Potty Train in a Year and a Half” video. In fact, I posted your video on my facebook for Woman Crush Wednesday – yes, it was THAT good.
Anyway, I have always called them DANGLY earrings and I think I will be sticking with that.
Definitely dangly – gangly is a teenage boy who is all arms and legs with no idea what to do with them.
But please do not enter me in the contest, because althoughI love them, I have another problem. It’s called “no neck”. It’s rather horrible and it means that the bottom of my lobes are about an inch above the top of my shoulder. Scary isn’t it! Blog on, Katy, it brightens my life.
DANGLY! Maybe Bing has better options! 😉
I take your word that they are officially called gangly earrings, but I will continue to call the dangly earrings. Gangly is something that you are if you have long arms and long legs which I guess makes sense because “gangly” earrings are usually pretty long, but they also dangle. This is a hard question. OI! How about dangle gangle earrings?
I call them dangly! Your post made me laugh! 🙂
Actually, I prefer “dangily.”
I always thought they were dangly. I never have even heard the gangly used to refer to earrings until today… I might start using it though just to see the reactions I get 😉
You can call them what you want but I call them dangilyever actually heard of gangily lol. I would alalso call them beautifu , stunning, and amazing!!! Thank you!
Dangly for sure. To me, “gangly” = the long, seemingly-disproportionate, about-to-fly-off-at-any-second limbs of a tall, skinny person (like my middle child). She’s tall and gangly (and she wears stud earrings, not gangly ones because that would be *really* weird).
FWIW, I’ve always thought that “scallions” sounds like the name of an STD (as in, “I had a roommate in college who had to go to the clinic to get treated for scallions”. Ewww….).
First off I love your blog. You crack me up on a daily basis! Secondly, I think dangly sounds better. Gangly sounds like a condition lol
Hey what happened with the other way of commenting?? the livfire or something like that?? Anyway, I had an addiction like yours as well, I would buy pair after pair after pair of earrings, but never wore any of them, or I did, and I took them off like in the middle of wherever I was. I just can’t wear them, so you can count me out of the giveaway, I wasn’t gonna win anyway!
And speaking of potty training, we started potty training Sofi again, because she had a regression, and she’s doing better-ish (I like to make up words, don’t hate) I found out that if I let her go commando, she would’t have any accidents!! Have you try that with JJ?? She now wears undies, because well, she CAN”T go commando everywhere! I also ghettofied our couches, in case of accidents, I wrapped up the seats with plastic garbage bags, it sounds funny when we seat, but is easier for me to wash the mess, and I get less frustrated!!
My kids call them Dangly Jangly earrings, so I agree with most…dangly. Gangly sounds skinny, awkward & cheap. I( I like cheap, but we say inexpensive instead)
I’ve always said dangly. I’ve never heard gangly used. It sounds a bit strange. Now I’m going to start questioning weird words before I say them!
I don’t think any word that describes something pretty starts with “gang” so I have to go with “dangly.” I know dang isn’t the best word, either, but it’s better than gang. This blog post was hilarious, one of my favorites. You don’t need to put me in the earring drawing!
Actually, they’re neither … They’re called “chandelier” earrings, but you must say it with an English accent.
I call them dangly…and I would love to win them! Seeing as I won the book though, I’m probably out of the running. But a girl can hope! 😉
Dangly, gangly makes me think of an awkward tall child or adult. Or like my long legged puppy, Laney is so gangly she is like a bull in a china shop.
[Whoot maybe I will receive extra points for using the word in a sentence!]
I vote dangly!
Definitely dangly. Gangly makes me think of gangrene, which is not a pleasant thought.
I’ll go with the flow and say “Dangly” sounds better. In my home country we call such earrings “Chandelier Earrings” because all of the :hanging” things 🙂
I’m addicted to earrings, they really make you hair look better..!!
I’ll go with the flow and vote for “Dangly”, sound much better. Back in my home country we call such earrings “Chandelier” earrings, because, you know, they are “hanging” like a chandelier.
I’m really addicted to earrings, I really believe they make your hair looks better..!!
Dangly. Gangly just sounds weird 🙂
