(This post and giveaway are sponsored by NatureBox. All stories and opinions are my own.)As a mother of two toddlers, I have learned to accept the fact that we will rarely venture out of our home without some sort of meltdown. Either we’ll skip Averi’s afternoon nap, and she’ll repay us with a Toddlers in Tiaras-worthy hissy fit, or JJ will wake up too early that morning and decide to do that whole-body limp thing every time we try to get him to walk. And since he’s a 3-year-old man-baby and weighs almost as much as I do, this is probably a fun scene for complete strangers to witness.
[Why can’t that woman control her teenage boy? And WHY is he wearing a diaper?]
Okay, he’s not that big.
Or—and this is the worst case scenario—in the midst of the chaos around me, I forget to eat. And, well, there is this sound that a roller coaster makes when it has to screech to a halt. And if you imagine that sound amplified and prolonged by six thousand, THAT is what I sound like when I’m hangry (hungry + angry = hangry).
Hell hath no fury like a woman starved.
That’s how the saying goes, right?
And Brian? Well, he doesn’t get hangry. Because he’s perfect.
(Ahem.)
Anyhow, we had one of these perfect hangry storms last week when we went to Cabela’s in Kansas City. Now, if you’re unfamiliar with Cabela’s (and I was until my father-in-law told me about it), it’s basically the type of place where Honey Boo Boo’s whole family and the Duck Dynasty folks would hang out if they weren’t so busy creating such quality television.
There are guns, camo, duck calls, pink guns, pink camo, and enough taxidermy specimens to classify it as the target of every PETA campaign from here until eternity.
(This photo is from last winter. Yes, those are real elephants. Well, they used to be.)
There is an impressive aquarium, a biplane suspended from the ceiling, boats, tents, deer stands, and millions upon millions of outdoorsy items that make absolutely no sense to me.
This place is a toddler’s paradise.
But I knew as soon as we parked the car we were going to have one of those moments. JJ immediately began to scream, “Nooooooo! I don’t want to get out of the caaaaaaaaaaaar!” And Averi, being the empathetic little sister, began to mimic his wails. We finally cajoled them both inside (after JJ’s brief meltdown at the entrance to the store). But, once inside, they both decided to test the store’s acoustics and put on a little show called “Someone Should Probably Call Supernanny.” I literally walked with Averi at arm’s length while she wiggled, kicked and screamed the entire length of the store—which felt like 20 miles at that point.
We made our way back outside the store and figured the kids would have some fun in the deer hunting hut thing. Well, that only caused them to scream and yell even more. Only, this time, we were at the entrance to the store where everyone in Kansas City could see us.
Once we finally got both kids back in the car and were able to stop the screaming, JJ finally blurted out, “I’m HUNGRY!” To which Averi added, “EEEEEEAT!”
And I realized in that moment that I forgot to feed them lunch.
Oops.
And this is where things get tricky. I’m not a Supermom by any stretch of the imagination, but I am a stickler when it comes to our kids’ healthy food habits. We rarely feed them fast food, and I buy very little processed stuff. We both try REALLY hard to make sure our kids eat well. But that temptation to choose convenience over nutrition is a real one. Especially for a forgetful mom like me.
This is why NatureBox has become a necessity in our house (and our car). Because no deer hunting hut is padded or soundproof enough to contain a hangry toddler.
I love that all of the NatureBox snacks are delicious—even our picky 3-year-old loves everything he is able to try (before I polish them off). I love that they have no high fructose corn syrup, no partially hydrogenated oils, no artificial sweeteners, no artificial flavors, no artificial colors, and 0g trans fat. I love that their snacks come straight to my house every month like an edible present that I hoard in the closet and only share in dire situations (the above video depicts one such situation).
I love that their customer service is incredible (you could even tell that from their Facebook page). I love that they will let me cancel or change my subscription at any time—no strings. I love that shipping is always free.
And since I’m so crazy about NatureBox, I asked if they would give me the chance to hook y’all up as well. And they generously agreed!
TWO of my readers will win snacks for three months! Every month includes five bags of snacks with 3-4 servings in each bag. Now, I’m not a mathematician or anything, but I’m pretty sure that’s 15 bags of snacks or approximately 45-60 servings FOR FREE.
To enter this giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comment section below:
Why do you think Supernanny won’t answer my calls?
KIDDING. Don’t answer that. (Seriously, mom. Don’t.)
Here’s the real question:
Do you hide your favorite snacks from your family too?
This post is sponsored by NatureBox. I was compensated with money and delicious snacks. All stories and opinions are my own. Only one entry will be counted per person. Entrants must be residents of the USA. Two winners will be chosen at random and announced on the blog this Friday, October 25, 2013.
No, I don’t hide my favorite snacks. I just put them on the lowest kitchen shelf behind anything and everything that is already on the shelf. Fat chance anyone will find them. After all, if certain people only eat what they see when they’re standing in front of an open refrigerator then they’re not going to squat down and rummage through a shelf to see what’s in the back. Occasionally a food item might be hiding in my lingerie drawer.
I completely hide snacks! I have 2 teens and a toddler, I’d never get a snack otherwise 🙂 and I love the word “hangry” even though spell check wants to change it.
You better believe I hide my snacks. Or at least I used to. I always had to hide my Cheetos, Cheez-Its, Fig Newtons, Doritos, et al from you when you were growing up. You remember don’t you? Oh wait, did I just let out one of those family secrets?
Just kidding….except the part about the Cheetos, Cheez-Its, Fig Newtons and Doritos. You know, after reading the list of my favorite snacks, maybe I need to be introduced to Nature Box.
I am lucky that I do not have to hide my snacks… I love love love dried mangos, and my husband and son absolutely hate them! And I do most of my snacking while I’m at work, so I can kind of hoard everything in my desk at work, and no one knows that anything is in there!
There is no hiding snacks from 14-year-old and 11-year-old old girls. They have a 6th sense or something that must be tied into their hormones and strengthened by their eye-rolling abilities and overall surly attitudes.
So clearly, I must win these great snacks. I must. They are truly eating us out of house and home (as if that isn’t the same place).
I need to make my own video: When Hangry Teenagers Attack. It will scare you beyond belief because it. is. your. future.
Sorry. I’m hungry.

I totally hide snack. There are snack that I REAL hide and snack I pretend hide. I have found that nothing taste better to my lovely children than the food that is supposed to me moms. So the snacks I want them to eat but they typically overlook on their own (the granola bars, the raisins and trail mixes, the fruits) I “hide”. I have a container in my cupboard that is all pretty and screams MOM’S stuff that sits just within their reach in the cupboard. They think it is hilarious to sneak a snack out of there and show me the empty wrapper when its gone. And I make a big fuss over eating MY food and they all laugh and everyone is happy.
Then there are the real goods… those mommy-is-ready-to-flip-her-lid snacks that are decadent chocolates and desperate moment candy bars. Those get REAL hid. Like stuffed inside grandmas china on top of the cupboards and behind some fancy cups kinda hid.
I don’t “hide” snacks, but I let my hubby know that there are only a certain number of “non-chocolate” things for me, so please don’t eat them if you can help it! haha
Of course I hide *snacks* that are meant for mommy!! As a type 1 diabetic, it’s really a good idea for me to have quick grab snacky items readily available. (read: mass quantities of chocolate “just in case”) 😉 At least that’s what I tell myself in weak moments. My son has decided that he likes “bread brown things” (aka little Debbie brownies) and they are like Delta force hiding in the cabinet as we speak!!
I have a 12 year old and a 2 year old, both boys. So, of course I attempt to hide my favorite snacks! Unfortunately, the elder one knows most of my tricks and the younger one is a climber, so not even the top of the refrigerator is safe from him! (No, no. He doesn’t scale the fridge or anything. He is very good at moving my dining chairs, however, and turning anything that will bear his weight in to a step stool.)
I don’t have to hide the food. But I will eat chocolate in the other room. Don’t like all the guilty looks I get!
It definitely depends on the size of the snack… but if its down to the last one I am bigger, so I win! And definitely put the snacks out of sight… from my kids, my husband, and my father in law! I also have a finders fee when my kids get a really good snack, I always get a piece as a finders fee! Just trying to teach them some economics right?
I don’t really hide snacks, but there are a lot of snacks that my husband doesn’t like, that I do, so it works out. If I have something that I want only for me, I will typically take it to work with me and keep it for snacking there. 🙂
I don’t just hide my favorite snacks – I hide all snacks. If my toddler so much as sees the corner for a package of cookies, all I’ll hear is “coooookie ahmomomomomom” until he realizes, as cute as he is, I’m not going to give him one and then all hell breaks loose.
I DEFINITELY have to hide snacks if I want them to last more than a day in this house. I have two boys, a daughter who eats like a teenage boy and a husband who technically counts as two people. It doesn’t even matter if my favorite snack is something they don’t like…they’ll eat it anyway! Because it’s there. And it won’t eat them first. So…yeah. I hide them.
Yes, I hide them in the garage. Some people have “smoke breaks” in the garage, I go out there and eat…..by myself.
My children can smell snacks from a mile way. There is no point in hiding them. I wonder if they will ship them for free to Presidio, TX (read: The border of the USA and Mexico).
I don’t hide snacks. I just keep them out in the open in places where I know no one else will see them….next to the cleaning supplies.
Yes I do!
I hide my favorite snacks from my child, but not my husband. Mainly because my favorite snacks are not exactly the types of healthy foods that I want my child to consume. 🙂
I have to hide cheese! My kids love cheese and if it is within in their reach, they will eat 6 string cheeses each, or worse-the expensive organic cheddar cheese that I shred myself and store for later use. They get a handful and make a cheese ball as big as their fist and munch on it for 10 minutes. I also have to hide the $3.80 a pound apples from my 5 year old. He will eat 3 a day if he can reach them! My 2 year old has recently discovered croutons as an easy snack, so she takes the bag and hides them under the couch until she gets her fill! It would be nice to have dried fruit/healthy snacks to keep in the car. It’s hard to keep cheese cold too long and bananas turn brown immediately when I put them in a lunch box with a cold pack.
Ok, I don’t “technically” hide the snacks. I do, however, polish them off while everyone is sleeping. See? Nothing to hide here.
I have to hide my snacks from my husband otherwise they are HIS snacks.
Well, there is much of “snack hiding” that goes in our house, my husband hides his snacks from me, and both of us try to hide it from our 2 years old toddler. We’re usually successful in the toddler part, but my husband isn’t that great in hiding snacks from me, he is kind of a pleasure delayer, he does so little snacking every day, and then there’s me: The Snacks Monster, and the mother who knows every hiding place in the house, ha..!!
Of course, don’t all moms hide their favorite snacks? Thankfully my daughter is young enough I don’t have to hide them too well but I just make sure to wait to eat them when she’s in bed so she doesn’t beg for a bite 🙂
I wouldn’t call storing my dark chocolate in my office desk drawer (where NO ONE ever looks) hiding, just convenient . . . otherwise, nope.
Yes! Well, no… not technically. My favorite think to sneak to eat is chocolate morsels for baking. They are just conveniently located with the baking stuff so the kids and hubby don’t even really know they are around. 🙂
Yes. Yes, i do.
Ummm..shoot yea I do! My fav right now are Sunbelt Bakery blueberry harvest chewy granola bars!… Or the Snickers on the egg shelf in the fridge…and pretzels in a beer box…
heck yes I hide the good snacks from the rest of my family!
Well, I say they aren’t hidden. My extra snack cupboard happens to be in my laundry room. I have a 14 year old and a husband if they happened to go in the laundry room they would see the snacks sitting there however I started putting them out there 3 years ago and no one has found them yet. Once a week I pull out snacks for them and they go in the pantry and the rest stay in the laundry room that way mom can binge on her chocolate in peace. lol
Pfffff of course I hide my snacks! Specially if those snacks are my beloved stash of Samoas! I stalk Girl Scouts during cookie season, so I can buy as much boxes as I can to survive until next year!!
My daughter is fond of chocolate, just like me, so we really need to hide unhealthy treats and snacks, the good ones are within her reach.
I don’t have to hide my snacks, not because they are healthy and nobody else likes them, but because I usually polish them off before the others in my family even know they’re there. And, I have been known to buy only snacks that I know other people in my household don’t like, on purpose….I have no self-control….
When I was a high school teacher, I hid things at work that I didn’t want my hubby to eat. That was also before I cared about being healthy. Now, no I don’t hide snacks because I don’t really get to eat them anymore. A protein bar or a piece of fruit are my only snacks. I would LOVE to try NatureBox, as I’ve had several friends mention them recently!
I must admit, yes, yes I do hide snacks.
I also try to eat healthy and indulge in the occasional processed snack. No need to hide it, even though I have the perfect spot all picked out….
If it makes home from the store and there is anything left in the package I usually eat it while putting groceries away…
:S
I don’t technically hide my snacks but I do have to stash them high enough in my pantrry
to prevent my 2 year old from digging in whenever he pleases.
Oh Katie. Do I hide my snacks! I guess my son never told anyone when he first discovered my “stash.” But one random morning, when my MIL came over to watch the children, Beckham blurts out “Oh Nana! We are going to have so much fun! I found where mommy hides all of her candy!” And she proceeded to take my mother in law to our bedroom, get on his tummy, and reach far under my bed for a bag full of candy
There’s no shortage of snacks in my house so I don’t feel the need to hide them. Plus, I tend to go through phases with snacks and get tired of them quickly. NatureBox seems like the perfect solution to this (hint, hint)!
Yes, I have to hide my snacks from my “big kid” (i.e. husband), David! Top shelf of the pantry.
I don’t have family to hide my snacks from, but I do hide some of the NatureBox snacks from myself so I don’t eat the entire package at once.
Of course, I hide my snacks. Some things are too good for kids. They would have no true appreciation for chocolate covered pomegranate or be able to savor each bite of Rittersport with Marzipan. Ok, not great healthy snacks but my chocolate stash is off limits for anyone that doesn’t want to deal with this mess of stress and sleepless nights. I have a 6 yr. old with autism, a 4 yr. old with attitude, and a 6 month old (all boys). It’s been a year since I have had a full night sleep and I can’t unwind with a night cap because of the breastfeeding so chocolate it is. Their snacks are in the pantry where they can get them. 🙂
No, I don’t hide my favorite snacks! That’s absurd! They are just conveniently placed on the highest shelf behind the boxes of pasta and rice. Completely accessible for everyone!
We actually all like different things in my house, so there’s no real reason to hide anything. The only family member that we need to keep snacks away from is the dog!
I absolutely hide snacks. With a 2 & 4 year old in the house they wouldn’t last a day if they weren’t hidden. I think they would live off snacks alone if I allowed it. I have also been known to hide my favorites in places little eyes (and my husband’s) can’t see so I can keep them to myself.
I hide snacks in general and then release them into the cupboard one by one or occasionally a few at a time, If I keep snacks in the open, they disappear too quickly.
I don’t hide my snacks from my family but when I find something really delicious I do try to eat it all before anyone else can discover it. My trick is to leave a few pieces left in the bottom of the bag and if it is in a clear container I rearrange the items so it is less obvious that I devoured the whole package without sharing!
I don’t hide them, exactly. I buy them a “special snack”, give them one serving. Then mysteriously by morning, the rest of the snack is gone. Umm…I have no idea what happened to their “special snack”?
Fortunately, I don’t really have to hide my favorite snacks. My wife doesn’t really like most of my favorites, and my kids are too young to reach the shelves I keep them on.
Oh yes. There’s A box of Mallomars in the cleaning supplies cabinet as I type this.
No, I eat them all in the car before I bring them in the house 🙂
Here’s MY question…WHY is Nature Box biased against Canadians???? Argh!!!!!!!
Sorry about that, Dawn! I love our international readers, but I’m not allowed by law (federal and state) to award giveaways to non-US residents. I promise it’s not NatureBox being biased against Canadians. 🙂
Yes, I am so guilty of this! Just the other day I was eating carmel popcorn, that had been hidden….the kids questioned what they were smelling.. I told them it was a new air freshener. I know, so wrong, but they believed me!
Of course!! I always hide my favorite cereal!
Yes I have to hide my snacks from the grown ups in the house……. you will one day discover a hangry husband…lol
